Frans van den Wijngaerde’s etching, “Flight into Egypt”,1650, after Jan Thomas

Wijngaerde Wijngaerde (aka Frans van Wyngaerdt; Franciscus van den Wijngaerde; Wyngart) (1614­–1679)

“Flight into Egypt” (aka “Vlucht naar Egypte”), 1650, after the design by Jan Thomas (aka Jan Thomas van Ypern; Johannes Thomas; Johann Thomas; John Thomas) (1617–1678), published in Antwerp with a two-line dedication in Latin to Francisco Carpentier. A marvellously strong and near faultless but later impression.

Etching on wove paper with wide margins.

Size: (sheet) 41.8 x 51.9 cm; (plate) 30.3 x 40 cm; (image borderline) 28.6 x 39.6 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline (left of centre) “Dum nusquam profugo locus est tibi tutus IËSV,”; (right of centre) “Solatur donis te pia terra suis.”; (centre) “Reverendo admodum Domino, D. FRANCISCO CARPENTIER S. Theol. Licent. Cathedralis apud Iprenses S. MARTINI Ecclesiæ Canonico et Scholastico, Sede vacante è Vicariorum Collegio, Seminarii/ Iprensis Provisore vigilantissimo, Fautori sou optimo et colendiss. debitæ observantiæ ergô L. mq. D. D. Cq. Hollstein Dutch and Flemish 2 (Jeroen de Scheemaker [comp.] 2000, “Dutch and Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts 1450–1700: Joachim Wtewael to Frans van den Wyngaerde”, vol. 55, Rotterdam, Sound & Vision, p. 146, cat. no. 2).

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “The Flight into Egypt. Condition: a richly inked and strong (near faultless) impression with wide margins. Beyond a few minor spots of foxing, the sheet is in an excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions or significant stains.

I am selling this late impression of a large and magnificent etching for the total cost of AU$762 (currently/approximately US$513.91/EUR474.39/GBP401.13 at the time of posting this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries. Note that payment is in Australian dollars (AU$762) as this is my currency.
