Lucien Marcellin Gautier, “Le Quai de la Fraternité à Marseille”, 1883

Lucien Marcellin Gautier (aka Lucien Marcelin Gautier) (1850–1925)

“Le Quai de la Fraternité à Marseille” (The Quay of Fraternity in Marseille), 1883, from the series of fifteen etchings, “Vues de Marseille” (Beraldi 17–31), printed by L Eudes (fl.1876–1888) and published in Paris in the art periodical, “L'Art”, in 1883.

Etching with pale plate tone on laid paper, trimmed with a large margin around the image borderline (2.5 cm top and sides; 3 cm at bottom) and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 26.1 x 41.8 cm; (image borderline) 20.6 x 37 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Lucien Gautier del. & sc./ L’Art.”; (centre) “LE QUAI DE LA FRATERNITÉ À MARSEILLE”; (right) “Imp. Eudes.”

Beraldi 22 (Henri Beraldi 1887, “Les graveurs du 19e siècle; guide de l'amateur d'estampes modernes”, vol. 6, Paris, L Conquet, p. 254, cat. no. 22).

Condition: a richly inked and well-printed (near faultless) impression trimmed with a large margin around the image borderline and laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper providing wide margins. Beyond a few minor marks mainly in the lower margin, the sheet is in a good condition with no tears, holes or abrasions.

I am selling this large and historically important etching showing in great detail the famous quay bordering the eastern front of the Old Port of the city of Marseille—interestingly, Wikipedia advises that the quay has had several names through its history: Quai des Augustins (16th–17th centuries); Quai Rousseau (1789); Quai Impérial (1807); Quai Monsieur (1814); Quai d'Orléans (1849); Quai Napoléon (1853); Quai de la Fraternité (1871); Quai des Belges (1915); and has currently returned to the name as it was known at the time that this print was published, Quai de la Fraternité — for AU $263 in total (currently US $165.43/ EUR 159.33/GBP 133.01 at the time of posting this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries. Note that payment is in Australian dollars (AU$263) as this is my currency.
