Jan Sadeler I, “Blessed Helias”, c.1587, after Maarten de Vos

Jan Sadeler I (aka Johannes Sadeler; Johann Sadeler) (1550–1600)

“Blessed Helias” (TIB title)—Blessed Helias (aka Helie) de Bourdeille, was the bishop of Perigueux who died in 1484, c.1587 (1586–1588), after a drawing in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (inv. 79 b 17, f. 19) by Maarten de Vos (aka Maarten de Vos; Maerten de Vos) (1532–1603), plate 14 in the series, “Oraculum Anachoreticum” (aka “Hermits”), published by Jan Sadeler in Venice with privilege from Rudolf II of Habsburg.

Engraving on fine laid paper, trimmed around the platemark and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 17.2 x 21.6 cm; (plate) 17.1 x 21.4 cm; (image borderline) 15.9 x 20.8 cm.

Inscribed in plate within the image borderline: (lower right of centre) “Sadeler ex:”.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: “Pregrauis HELIAS …/ …// 14 [colour added]// …/ …/ …sequi.”

Lifetime impression. State i (of ii) before the erasure of the number “14” in the second state. Note that the number has had colour added, but the original engraved number is still visible.

TIB 7001.362 SI (Isabelle de Ramaix 2001, “The Illustrated Bartsch: Johan Sadeler I”, vol. 70, Part 2 [Supplement], New York, Abaris Books, p. 194, cat. no. [7001].362 S1); Hollstein 391 (1980, vol. 21, cat. no. 391).

The Rijksmuseum offers the following description of this print: (transl.) “Helias the hermit in a cave in the wilderness. He sits before a crucifix and reads a bible. A landscape with a city in the background.” (https://id.rijksmuseum.nl/200248018).

Condition: a strong and well-printed impression with flattened and toned printer’s creases and replenished loss of the lower right corner. Beyond these significant issues, there are no significant stains and the sheet has been laid onto a support of millennium quality washi paper providing wide margins.

I am selling this sensitively executed engraving showing the hermit, Blessed Helias, in his cave not far from town—I mention the closeness of the town as usually only female hermits are portrayed within a walking distance while males are more often shown in remote locations— for AU$297 (equivalent to approximately US$187.33, EUR 172.89, or GBP 144.97 at the time of listing) and includes Express Mail Service (EMS) postage and handling to any worldwide destination. Please note that any import duties or taxes levied by the destination country are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in the purchase price. Payment is requested in Australian dollars (AU$297).
