Legros is seldom
linked with the Impressionist movement, nevertheless, to my eyes this print
exemplifies the Impressionists' quest to create images that capture the effects
of shimmering light on surfaces. Going further, Legros’ crosshatched treatment
of the portrayed scene not only expresses the idea of sparkling light bouncing
off the river bank and the screen of trees beyond, the crosshatching may even
lend the suggestion of an intangible and non-visual sensation of crisp, fresh
air that Legros may have experienced when drawing the scene.
