Anthonie Waterloo (aka Anthoni
Waterloo; Antoni Waterlo) (1609–1690)
“The Pierced Rock” (Le Rocher Percé),
c1660 (BM’s attribution: 1637–1690), plate 1 from the series of four plates, “Four
landscapes,” from the Basan Edition (c1785) with the name of the
previous publisher, Reinier and Joshua Ottens (fl.1726–65) erased below
the artist’s monogram. Peter Morse (1992) (TIB, vol. 2, Part 1, Commentary, p.
10) advises that the British Museum holds a related drawing executed in black
chalk and wash.
Etching on laid paper trimmed close to
the plate mark.

The British Museum offers the following
description of this print:
“The pierced rock; a traveller resting
on the roadside underneath an overgrown stone arch at right”
Condition: a crisp and strong impression
with minimal signs of wear to the printing plate in excellent condition (i.e.
there are no tears, folds, holes, abrasions or significant stains—there is faint
foxing). The verso has remnants of mounting at the upper corners and collectors’
stamps, and notes in ink and pencil.

eye-catching etching—one of Waterloo’s small masterworks showcasing the 17th
century interest in natural forces shaping the landscape—for AU$214 (currently
