Claude Lorrain's etching, “Scène de Brigands”, 1633

Claude Lorrain (aka Claude Gellée, Claude; Claude Le Lorrain; Claudio di Lorena) (1600–82)

“Scène de Brigands” [Landscape with Brigands], 1633

Etching on wove paper published by McCreery in his 1816 edition of “200 Etchings” and printed from the original plate.
Size: (sheet) 12.9 x 19.7 cm
Inscribed below the image borderline at right: (not very legibly and I am relying on the text transcription provided by the British Museum) “Claudius in sup. P”.
State ix (of ix)

Mannocci 1988 11.IX (Lino Mannocci 1988, “The Etchings of Claude Lorrain”, London, Yale University Press, pp. 80–89); Blum 1923 7 (undescribed state, after VII); Robert-Dumesnil 1835-71 I.12 (undescribed state, after VII); Knab 117; Duplessis 12; Russell 17.

The British Museum offers the following description of this print:
“Landscape with two brigands; at the edge of a wood, two brigands attacking a man near a palm tree, while two others are taking his wife away, to the left.” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=3020340&partId=1&searchText=Brigands&page=1)

Condition: although this is a late impression (1816), the lines are crisp and well printed showing reworking of areas of wear to the printing plate. The sheet is in excellent condition for its age (i.e. there are no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of use), trimmed along the image borderline (as published by McCreedy) and backed with an archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper.

Note: this is the second impression of this eye-catching etching that I have posted—the earlier copy with its preparatory study have been sold.

I am selling this exceptionally rare etching executed by the one of the most famous of the early landscape artists, for the total cost of AU$333 (currently US$236.32/EUR208.18/GBP178.06 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).

If you are interested in purchasing this original etching by one of the major old masters, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
