Jean Lepautre (1618–1682)
“Font with Two Variants at Bottom and
Ornamented with the Adoration of the Shepherds”, c1667, plate 2 from the series
of six plates depicting fonts in the Roman style (“Plates ala Romaine”),
published in 1667 by Jean Leblond I (aka Jean Le Blond) and Pierre Mariette
(II) in 1667 and in a later edition by Jombert in 1751.
Etching on laid paper, trimmed along the
image borderline (retaining the artist’s name appending the borderline) and
backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 29.4 x 21.1 cm.
Inscribed on plate below the image
borderline: (right) “le Potre fecit”.
Condition: a richly inked and near
faultless early impression trimmed along the image borderline but retaining the
artist’s name below the borderline and backed with a support sheet. The trimmed
sheet is in excellent condition with no tears, folds, holes, abrasions, significant
stains or foxing.
