Dancker Danckerts (1634–1666)
“Afternoon: shepherd family resting with
herd” (Middag: herdersfamilie rust met kudde), 1660–1666) after Nicolaes
Berchem (aka Nicolaes Pietersz.Berchem; Nicolaes Pietersz. Berrighem;
Nicolaes Berchen; Niclas Berghem; Claes Berighem) (621/22–1683), plate 2 from
the series of 4 plates, “The Four Times of Day”, published by Nicolaes Visscher
II (aka Nicolaas Visscher; Claes Claesz Visscher; Nicolai Vischer) (1649–1702).
Etching on heavy wove paper trimmed
close to the plate mark and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 38.3 x 48.3 cm; (plate) 38
x 47.7 cm; (image borderline) 35.4 x 46.5 cm.
Lettered on plate below the image
borderline: (left) "Berghem inventor.”; (centre) “Ex Formis Nicolai
Visscher cum Privelegio Ordinum Hollandiæ et Westfrisæ.”; (right) “Dancker
Danckerts Fecit.” (virtually erased “et Excudit”)
State v? (of v) with the plate number
and Danckerts role as publisher erased and replaced with Nicolaes Visscher II as
publisher.

The Rijksmuseum offers the following
description of this print in its second state:
(Transl.) “Shepherd family rests with
herd of cows by trees. Shepherdess is sitting with child on her lap. Print
number 2 from series of four prints with times of the day.”

Condition: richly inked impression with
strong contrasts. There is a closed tear towards the centre of the left side,
otherwise the sheet is in excellent condition (i.e. there are no folds, holes,
abrasions, stains, foxing or significant signs of use). The sheet is trimmed close
to the plate-mark and backed with a support sheet of archival (millennium
quality) washi paper.
