“Théophile Gautier”, 1857, after the photograph by Félix Nadar (aka Gaspard-Félix Tournachon) (1820–1910), printed by Auguste Delâtre (1822–1907) and published in Paris.

Etching with aquatint trimmed along the image borderline on the top and sides and retaining the publication details below the image borderline, backed with a support sheet.

Note: this etching is taken from a different printing plate to the companion print of the same subject that I am also posting today—they are not different states of the same print.

Size: (sheet) 16.4 x 11.3 cm; (image borderline) 15.8 x 11.3 cm.

Lettered on plate below the image borderline: (left) "Bracquemond d'après la Photog. de Nadar."; (right, trimmed) "Paris Imp. Del…[atre 171 r. S. Jacques]".

Regarding the state, the Curator of the British Museum offers the following explanation:

“The state is not recorded by Beraldi or Bouillon; neither mention the printer's address. This state appears to occur after Beraldi 49.IV & V and Bouillon Ae 45.VII & VIII (after the removal of the publication title alongside the top, and before the addition of a publication date), or after Beraldi 49.V and Bouillon Ae 45.VIII.”

The Curator of the British Museum offers the following description of this print (see BM no. 1901,1022.342):

“Portrait of Théophile Gautier, half-length turned to right, bearded, wearing Greek cap, after a photograph by Nadar.”

Condition: crisp and well-printed impression trimmed along the image borderline at top and sides but retaining the publication details. The sheet is in very good condition (i.e. there are no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains or foxing) and is laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper.

“This is a heliogravure reproduction, produced by Amand-Durand, of a larger portrait of Gautier by Bracquemond, after a photograph by Nadar (Beraldi 49; Bouillon Ae 45). The plate was subsequently reworked by Bracquemond and its size reduced.”
