(Unidentified artist from the circle of) Paulus Potter’s etching, “Fighting Steers”, 1650–1700

(Unidentified artist from the circle of) Paulus Potter (1625–1654)

“Fighting Steers” (TIB title) (aka “Les deux boeufs qui se batten”; “Two Fighting Oxen”; “Twee Vechtende Ossen”), 1650–1700, copy in the same direction after Paul Potter’s seventh plate from the series of eight etchings of cattle, “Het Bullenboekje” (Various oxen and cows). This print is very close to the copy by an anonymous artist held by the Rijksmuseum: http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.228074 but there may be subtle differences. Compare this print with Potter’s etchings of the first and third states held by the Rijksmuseum: (first state) http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.39027; (third state) http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.39028. I presume that this is a 19th century impression.

Etching on buff-coloured laid paper backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 12.7 x 16.5 cm; (plate) 10.8 x 14.5 cm; (image borderline) 10.4 x 14 cm.

Paulus Potter’s etching: TIB 1(1).7–1 (45) (Leonard J Slatkes [ed.] 1978, “The Illustrated Bartsch: Netherlandish Artists”, vol. 1, New York, Abaris Books, p. 41, cat. no. 7–1).

Condition: a superb, richly inked and well-printed impression with small margins (approx. 1cm) in near pristine condition (i.e. there are no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of use) laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper.

I am selling this superb copy by an unidentified printmaker after the etching of the same composition by Paulus Potter for AU$140 (currently US$99.51/EUR88.70/GBP76.32 at the time of posting this print) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).

If you are interested in purchasing this powerful etching (after Potter) in near pristine condition, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
