Girard Audran (aka Gérard Audran) (1640–1703)
“God the Father Carried by Angels”,
1681, after Charles Le Brun’s (1619–1690) fresco in the cupola of the
chapel at the Château de Sceaux near Paris, the central print from the series
of five plates, “Triumph of the New Testament over the Old Testament.”
IMPORTANT: Julie L Mellby in The
Princeton University Library blog, “Graphics” (March 27, 2013), explains how this and the other prints in the series are
designed to abut and mesh together in recreating a grand image of the cupola—marvellous!:
Engraving with etching on laid paper
trimmed close to the plate mark and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 38.8 x 50.6 cm.
IFF 89 (Département des Estampes 1930,
“Inventaire du Fonds, Français: graveurs du XVIIe siècle”, Paris, Bibliothèque
Nationale); Robert-Dumesnil 81.
The Rijksmuseum offers a description of
this print:
Condition: richly inked and well-printed
impression with flatten folds (with pale discolouration along the fold marks),
several restored tears and signs of use (a few minor surface marks). The sheet
is laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper.
I am selling this large old master
engraving reproducing a section of Le Brun’s ceiling fresco for a total cost of AU$236 (currently US$165.02/EUR147.33/GBP125.86
at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the
world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).
If you are interested in purchasing this
luminous and elegantly executed interpretation of the colours and tones of a
painting as a design in line—and if should also mention the critically
important ingredient that Audran captures in Le Brun’s composition: ampleur
(i.e. the effect of breadth)—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com)
and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
