William Lee Hankey (1869–1952)
"Sitting Up” (aka “Mother and Child”),
c1917, drypoint printied with bistre coloured ink on cream laid paper with
watermark, inscribed with the artist’s monogram on plate and with the artist’s
drystamp below the platemark and pencil signed by the artist.
Size: (sheet) 26.9 x 20.6 cm; (plate) 14
x 10.8 cm.
Inscribed on plate at lower right corner
with the artist’s monogram (entwined initials) with copyright mark drawn
beneath.

Suppl. 2637a) below the plate mark at left of centre and pencil signed by the
artist’s hand followed by hand-written publication details: “W Lee-Hankey inv.
et del.”
Condition: faultless early impression
with richly inked burr in the drypoint lines, fully signed (i.e. monogramed on
plate, drystamped monogram and hand-signed by the artist in pencil) with
generous margins. There is a 7 mm tear on the left side and there are
inventory numbers at the lower right corner of the sheet, otherwise the
sheet is in near pristine condition (i.e. there are no holes, folds,
abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of use).
I am selling this small masterwork drypoint, portraying a tender moment between a mother and child, for the total cost
of AU$340 (currently US$235.59/EUR210.03/GBP182.44 at the time of this listing)
including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course,
any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).
If you are interested in purchasing this
strong drypoint by one of the influential printmakers at the beginning
of the 20th century—especially for his breath of handling and
avoidance of affectation—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and
I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
