Antonio Casanova y Estorach's drypoint, “Two Friars Secretively Discussing a Young Woman”, 1878

Antonio Casanova y Estorach (1847–1896)

“Two Friars Secretively Discussing a Young Woman” (descriptive title only), 1879 (as inscribed on plate).
Drypoint with light plate tone on fine cream coloured wove (China) paper backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 13.9 x 20.5 cm; (plate indistinct) 11.3 x 18.5 cm; (image borderline) 10.3 x 17.3 cm.
Inscribed on plate within the image borderline: (upper left corner) "A. Casonova / fecit 1879”.

Although I have been unable to locate another copy of this print—it must be rare!—the British Museum holds a similar drypoint by this Spanish/Catalan artist, “Fin Gourmet” (1878), featuring a friar shown in the tricky art of drinking a cup of tea while laughing:

See also another drypoint by this artist, “Un Coin de Jardin”, held by Redwood Library & Athenæum featuring a friar and a young woman—possibly the same lady as shown here:

Condition: well-printed delicate drypoint impression with small margins (approx. 1.5 cm) backed with a conservator’s support sheet of fine archival/millennium quality washi paper. The upper edge or the sheet has a line of binding glue otherwise the sheet is in pristine condition (i.e. there are no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of use).

I am selling this sensitively executed drypoint of friars at odds with modern life—a favourite subject of this artist—exemplifying the nineteenth century Spanish genre of costumbrismo (i.e. scenes of everyday life where very different lifestyles are juxtaposed)—for AU$230 (currently US$160.97/EUR142.91/GBP126.65 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).
