Henri Fantin-Latour (aka Ignace
Henri Jean Théodore Fantin-Latour) (1836–1904)
“L’Immortalité”, 1898, published in “L'Estampe
Moderne” with the original support sheet stamped with the publisher’s
blindseal.
Regarding the composition of this
lithograph, the Curator of the British Museum advises:
“Same composition as a lithograph
executed for Jullien's 'Richard Wagner' (Paris, 1886) …. This enlarged version
is not described in Hédiard's or Fantin-Latour's catalogue.”
(BM no. 1899,0120.173)
Lithograph (with scraping on stone) on
buff-coloured fine China paper with—but detached from—the original support
sheet with blindseal from “L'Estampe Moderne” at lower right. Both the
lithograph and the original support sheet are backed with archival paper.
Size: (lithograph sheet) 35.5 x 24.8 cm;
(“L'Estampe Moderne” support sheet) 40.5 x 30.5 cm.
Lithograph is signed on plate at lower
left edge, “Fantin”, and the original support sheet is stamped with the
publisher’s blind seal of the profile of a young woman’s head—possibly the
goddess, Pheme (aka Ossa), who is the personification of fame.
Fantin-Latour 1911 1291 (same
composition) (Mme Fantin-Latour 1911, “Catalogue de l'Oeuvre Complet de
Fantin-Latour”, Paris, Henri Floury); Hédiard 1906 74 (same composition) (Germain
Hédiard 1906, “Fantin-Latour: Catalogue de l'oeuvre lithographie du Maître”,
Paris, Librairie de l'Art Ancien et Moderne).
The British Museum offers the following
description of this print:
“Glory, personified by a winged female
figure carrying a palm leaf, scatters flowers on a tomb; plate from 'L'Estampe
Moderne'. 1898 Lithograph”
See also the description at the Art
Institute of Chicago:
"In this composition the winged figure of
Glory descends from a starry sky. She holds a palm leaf, often associated with
martyrdom and greatness, in one hand, and small flowers flow out of the other.
In other versions of this print Fantin pays homage to Richard Wagner by
including the composer’s name on a gravestone below Glory’s feet. Such an image
suggests the composer’s immortality achieved through his masterful, enduring
compositions."
Condition: near faultless impression.
The original support sheet is in excellent condition (i.e. there are no tears,
holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains or foxing) but I have decided to
separate it from the lithograph as the paper is not of archival quality and
will ultimately damage the lithograph. Both the lithograph and the original
support sheet have been backed with a conservator’s support sheet of fine
archival/millennium quality washi paper.
I am selling this rare original large version
lithograph of the smaller lithograph published as the final plate in Adophe Jullien’s
“Richard Wagner: Sa Vie et ses Oeuvres” (1886), for the total cost of AU$230 (currently
US$160.29/EUR142.74/GBP126.35 at the time of this listing) including postage and
handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes
imposed by some countries).
