Unidentified
printmaker after the etching by Hanns Lautensack (aka Hans Sebald
Lautensack) (c1520–1564/6)
“Town on a
River” (Bartsch title “Vue dúne petite ville …”) 1553 (or after), copy in the
same direction as the etching by Lautensack (TIB 1[9], 41-1 (222); Hollstein 31;
Schmitt 54) from Lautenack's series of eight landscapes (Hollstein
26–33).
Etching on laid
paper with small margins around the image borderline and backed with a support
sheet.
Size: (sheet)
12.3 x 17.3 cm; (image borderline) 11.8 x 16.8 cm.
Inscribed on
plate at lower centre: “HSB/ 1553.” Note that Lautensak signed his print with an
entwined monogram very similar to this print, but with the initials “HSL”.
See the
British Museum’s description of Lutensack’s etching from the second state:
See also Jan
S Peters (ed.) 1982, “The Illustrated Bartsch: German Masters of the Sixteenth
Century”, vol. 18, p. 404.
Condition: crisp
and well-printed impression in excellent condition, trimmed with a small margin
close to the image borderline and laid upon a support sheet of archival
(millennium quality) washi paper. There is small loss at the lower left corner
of the margin.
