Alfred
Alexandre Delauney (1830–1895)
“Trees Silhouetted in a Forest” (descriptive title
only), late 1800s. (Note that Delauney executed a similarly romantic vision of
a forest in a vertical format—but significantly larger—“Birds and a Cascade
Waterfall”, dated on the plate, “1890” (see https://www.printsandprinciples.com/2019/03/alfred-alexandre-delauneys-huge-etching.html).
Etching with drypoint on fine laid paper (with
watermark), inscribed minutely with the artist’s name on plate (below the image
borderline at centre).
Size: (sheet) 25.6 x 17.9 cm; (plate) 15.5 x 8.6 cm;
(image borderline) 14.8 x 8.3 cm.
Inscribed in extremely small lettering on plate
below the image borderline: (centre) “Delauney”.
This may be a proof-state impression as there are no
plate lettered publication details.
Condition: richly inked and well-printed impression
with large margins (approx. 4.5 cm) in pristine condition (i.e. there are no
tears, holes, folds, losses, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of use).
I am selling this small, sparklingly luminous and
rare impression—note that I have been unable to locate another copy of this
print in any of the major museums or online—for [deleted] including postage and handling to anywhere
in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some
countries).
If you are interested in purchasing this little
jewel of an etching that fits well with FL Leipnik’s (1924) assessment of the
artist—albeit with regard to his street scenes—in “A History of French Etching
from the Sixteenth Century to the Present Day”, that Delauney “had a foible for
dark … and accentuating … gloom” (p. 126), please contact me
(oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make
the payment easy.
