Jean Charles François' engraving, "Hand Pointing Right", c. 1748

Jean Charles François (1717-1769)

“Hand Pointing Right”, c.1748, plate 31 in a series of 37 plates to “Nouveau Livre de Principes de Dessein” (note that this series was published in two parts with title plates: "Principes de Desseins Faciles”, published in 1740 featuring 12 plates and “Nouveau livre de Principes de Dessein” published in 1748 featuring 22 plates [see BM no. 1990,0728.51.1-37), after the design by Adrien Dassier (1630–1688), published by Louis Surugue (c.1686–1762) in Lyon in 1748.

Engraving on laid paper with a small margin around the platemark backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 21 x 28.2 cm; (plate) 20.5 x 27.7 cm; (image borderline) 19.2 x 27 cm.
Inscribed on plate below the image borderline: (left) “d’apres L'Etude d'ad Dassier.”; (centre) “C. P. R.”; (right) monogram [entwined letters JCF] f[?] Sc”.

Condition: richly inked and well-printed impression trimmed with a small margin around the platemark and laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. Beyond a few dots of pale foxing the sheet is in very good condition (i.e. there are no tears, holes, folds, losses, abrasions, or significant stains).

I am selling this visually arresting engraving designed as a model drawing for art students to copy/study, for AU$210 in total (currently US$146.05/EUR130.89/GBP111.54 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).

If you are interested in acquiring this superbly executed engraving—note in particular the use of dots foreshadowing what would eventually become a stylistic hallmark of Jean Charles François when he showcased in France the crayon-manner of engraving (viz. the use dots to graphically reproduce the textures of chalk drawings) developed by Pond and Knapton in England—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
