Matthäus Merian I (aka Matthaeus Merian) (1593–1650)

“Emperor Julius Caesar on Horseback”, 1610–1650, plate I from the series, “The First Twelve Roman Caesars”, in reverse after the etching (1596) by Antonio Tempesta (1555–1630) (see https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/400927), published in Strasburg by Johann Tischerning (c.fl.1685–1700 [see WorldCat publications]), c.1690.

Etching on laid paper trimmed with a narrow margin around the platemark and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet trimmed slightly unevenly) 31.1 x 24 cm; (image borderline) 30.6 x 23.1 cm.
Numbered on plate at lower left and right corners: “I”.
Lettered on plate in lower tablet: (left) “A. Tempest. inue:” (centre) “DIVI IVLI CAESAR AV./ Strasburg bey Johan Tscherning aufs Tomas Plan.”; (right)M. Merian. fec:”

The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers a description of this print from the state before the addition of the publication details for Tischerning:

Condition: richly inked impression with numerous restored tears and replenished loses (e.g. to the right of the tablet) in the lower section of the sheet. To address the restored damage, the sheet has been laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper.
