Three engravings from Jombert’s “Méthode pour apprendre le dessin", 1784


Three engravings from Charles-Antoine Jombert’s (1712-1784) drawing course published in Paris in 1784:

“Méthode pour apprendre le dessin: ou l'on donne les regles générales de ce grand art, & des préceptes pour en acquérir la connoissance, & s'y perfectionner en peu de tems: enrichie de cent planches représentant différentes parties du corps humain d'aprés Raphael & les autres grands maîtres, plusieurs figures académiques dessinées d'aprés nature par M. Cochin, les proportions & les mesures des plus beaux antiques qui se voient en Italie, & quelques études d'animaux & de paysage”

(transl.) “Method for learning drawing: where we give the general rules of this great art, & precepts to acquire knowledge, & perfect it in a short time: enriched with a hundred plates representing different parts of the human body after Raphael & the other great masters, several academic figures drawn from nature by M. Cochin, the proportions & the measures of the most beautiful antiques seen in Italy, & some studies of animals & landscapes”

Size: (sheet) 28 x 21 cm; (plate) 23.8 x 17.8 cm.
Lettered on plate along lower edge: (left) “Raphael pinx.”; (right) “C.N. Cochin P.Sculp.”
Condition: well-printed early impression showing guide lines for the lettering and before numbering. There are faint marks at the upper left corner otherwise the sheet is in excellent condition with margins and laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper.

Condition: strong well-inked impression with margins and laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. There is an almost invisible restoration of an abraded mark in the hair, otherwise the sheet is in excellent condition
