Léopold Flameng’s etching, “L’Enfant Trouvé”. c.1855

Léopold Flameng (aka Léopold Joseph Flameng) (1831–1911)

“L’Enfant Trouvé” (The Found Child), c.1855, printed by Pierron (fl.1849–1866) in Paris.

Etching on chine collé on wove paper with wide margins and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 31.9 x 22.5 cm; (image borderline) 12 x 8.2 cm.
Inscribed on plate above the image borderline: (centre) “'imp. Pierron R[ue] Montfaucon 1.”; (below latern at centre) “flameng”; (indistinct and possibly in drypoint below baby at centre) “Flameng”.

Condition: strong, richly-inked and well-printed impression with generous margins in near pristine condition (i.e. there are no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains or foxing) laid onto a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper.

I am selling this dramatic etching from the Romantic Era showing a solitary traveller’s late night discovery of an abandoned baby lying outside a building, for the total cost of AU$182 (currently US$119.67/EUR105.03/GBP91.51 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).

If you are interested in purchasing this darkly glowing etching by one of the most famous printmakers of the 19th century—note the inventive use of squiggly lines to suggest light “battling” to illuminate darkness and the way that the artist has added small strokes around the back of the man carrying a lantern to pictorially “fit” him into the scene—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
