Louis Marie Lemaire (1824–1910)
“Bouquet de Pavots” (Bouquet of [Peony] Poppies), 1880, proof impression before lettering with the plate number (26) and address of Alfred Cadart (1828–1875) (56 Bard Haussmann) for publication in “L'Eau-Forte”.
The Curator of the British Museum offers the following insights about the publication in which this print was to be featured in (after the publication details were lettered onto the plate):
“From a volume (507 x 370mm) of four years of 'L'Eau-Forte...', 1878-81, containing 124 prints by various artists including Daubigny, Lhermitte and Appian (Paris: A Cadart); with artists and titles at front of each section, this section with introduction by Jules Claritie; bound in red with buckram covers and leather spine”
Etching on fine buff-coloured China paper signed on plate by the artist.
Size: (sheet) 34.4 x 23.4 cm; (indistinct platemark) 27.7 x 20? cm; (image borderline) 23.5 x 17,2 cm.
Inscribed on plate below the image borderline: (left) “L Lemaire”,

“Plate 26: still-life of vase of poppies on table, with books; from a volume of four years of 'L'Eau-Forte'. c.1880 Etching”

Condition: richly inked, faultless impression with wide margins in near pristine condition–beyond pencil notations along the lower edge of the sheet written by a previous collector regarding the artist. This is a magnificent, museum-quality, impression.
