Unidentified Flemish engraver
(Note: the attribution of
the engraver as Flemish and the date of execution of this engraving is based on
information supplied by the dealer from whom I purchased this
print. I can also see why this may be the case as the sensitively handled contour
modelling of the figures and the mannered treatment of the distant trees seems
appropriate for Flemish/Netherlandish engravers of the late 1500s.)
“Expulsion of Adam and Eve
from Paradise”, c.1590, after Raphael’s (1483–1520) fresco painting of
the same subject (c.1517–19) in the vault of the second bay of the Raphael
Loggia in the Vatican, illustrating the Old Testament verses from Genesis 3:22–24
(New International Version):
“22 And the Lord God said,
“The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be
allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and
live forever.”
23 So the Lord God
banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been
taken.
24 After he drove the man
out, he placed on the east side[a] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming
sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”
Engraving on fine laid
paper with watermark (walking duck).

uoluptatis, collocauitq[ue] ante eum Cherubin et flameum/ gladium atq[ue]

Condition: strong
impression on laid paper with ample margins. There is a stain-like mark between
the angel and Adam that may have occurred during the printing process rather
than a later defect and there are minor handling-marks in the margins otherwise
the print is in excellent condition.
