Workshop of Michael Wolgemut (1434–1519). The
workshop artists included Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1460–1494) and his
apprentice Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528).
(Recto) “Nicholas of Flüe”, 1493, the patron saint of
Switzerland (1417–1487) shown drinking water from a spring next to a church. St
Nicholas is famous for his vision of a horse eating a lily which he understond
to mean that the horse (symbolic of his everday/temporal life) had swallowed
his spiritual life (symbolised by the lily). I understand that St Nicholas drank only water and did
not eat anything beyond the eucharist for nineteen years.
(Verso) “Canonist Antonio
Roselli” and “Sultan Mehmed II”, 1493.
Leaf of woodcuts from Hartmann
Schedel’s (1440–1514) “Nuremberg Chronicle” (aka “Schedelsche Weltchronik”;
“Schedel's World Chronicle”), published in Nuremberg in 1493.
Size: (sheet) 38.5 x 26.1
cm.
Condition: excellent impressions on
laid paper. There are a few worm-holes and minor pale staining otherwise the sheet
is in very good condition for its age (i.e. there are no tears, folds, losses,
abrasions, significant stains or foxing).
I am selling this leaf
from the famous 1493 “Nuremberg Chronicle” featuring three woodcuts—one showing
the patron saint of Switzerland drinking from a spring—for AU$296 (currently
US$202.38/EUR180.99/GBP163.90 at the time of this listing) including postage
and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import
duties/taxes imposed by some countries).
If you are interested in
