Crispijn de Passe I (aka Crispin Van de Passe; Crispin De Passe) (1564–1637)
The complete set of six
engravings from “The History of Adam and Eve”, c1590 (1580–1600), after Maarten
de Vos (aka Marten de Vos; Maerten de Vos) (1532–1603), initially published by Philips Galle (aka Philippe Galle; Philippus Gallaeus) (1537–1612) in Antwerp. These impressions have the original encircling rings of text removed and, consequently, must have been published later.
See the suite of engravings with the rings of text at the National Gallery of Victoria:
(upper row from left)
“The Creation of Adam”
“The Creation of Eve”
“The First Prohibition”
(lower row from left)
“The Fall of Man”
“Adam and Eve Hiding”
“The Expulsion from
Paradise”
Engravings on laid paper.
Size: (average sheet) 13.8
x 10.8 cm; (average dia. plate) 7.5 cm; (average dia. image borderline) 7.2 cm.
Condition: well-printed
impressions with margins around the platemark. The sheets are in good condition
for their considerable age, nevertheless there are a few fleck stains (e.g. “The
Fall of Man” has several spots at the left edge of the sheet) and “The First
Prohibition” has a flattened printer’s crease in the lower margin.
