Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi’s etching, “Flight into Egypt”, c1655

Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi (aka Francesco Bolognese) (1606–1680)

“Flight into Egypt”, c1655 (1630–1680). John T Spike in the catalogue raisonné for Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi (TIB, 1981, vol. 42) makes the interesting proposal: “The figures are, by all appearance, by Alessandro Grimaldi [Giovanni Francesco’s son (1630–63)]” (p. 59).

Etching on laid paper (with watermark, possibly, “Lily in the double circle”), trimmed with a narrow margin around the platemark and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 33.1 x 47 cm; (platemark) 32.7 x 46.6 cm; (image borderline) 32.2 x 46.2 cm.

Inscribed on plate at lower centre: “Gio. fran co Grimaldi Bologne. in fec.”

State ii  (of ii)

TIB 42 (19). 51 (113) (John T Spike 1981, “The Illustrated Bartsch: Italian Masters of the Seventeenth Century”, vol. 42 [39], New York, Abaris Books, p. 51, cat. no. 51 [113]); Bellini 2012, no. 53.ii; Bartsch XIX.113.51.

The British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art offer descriptions of this print:

https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1874-0808-691;

https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/816246.

Condition: a well-printed early impression (based on the quality of the line showing minimal wear to the printing plate), trimmed with a thread margin around the platemark and laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. There are chipped losses to the margin, a few small closed tears to the edges, flattened bumped corners and other signs of handling; otherwise the sheet is in a good condition for its large size and considerable age with no significant holes, stains or foxing.

I am selling this very beautiful and large etching described in the TIB catalogue raisonné as “one of the most beautiful in the oeuvre of … [the] artist” (TIB, 1981, vol. 42, p. 59), for AU$346 (currently US$251.76/EUR213.86/GBP194.73 at the time of posting this print) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this major etching by Grimaldi, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
