Ludwig Kühn’s etching, “Moine”, c1880

 Ludwig Kühn (1859–1936)

“Moine” (Monk), c1880, after the painting by Ludwig Kühn (as inscribed on the plate), published in the sumptuous periodical, “L’Art” and printed by A Clèment (fl.c1875–1892) in Paris.

Etching on cream wove paper with full margins as published

Size: (sheet) 30 x 44.4 cm; (plate) 14.7 x 20 cm; (image borderline) 12.8 x 15.9 cm.

Lettered on plate below the image borderline: (left) “L’Art” (centre): “L. Kuhn pinx. et sc./ MOINE”; (right) “Imp. A. Clèment_Paris”.

Fine Art Museums of San Francisco offer a brief description of this print: https://art.famsf.org/l-kuhn/moine-l.

Condition: Richly inked and well-printed strong impression with generously wide margins as published. There are a few faint marks in the margins and the lower right corner is slightly thin in thickness compared to the rest of the sheet, otherwise the sheet is in excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions or significant stains.

I am selling this beautifully executed etching—note how the etcher has been able to connote the difference of sheen and light intensity between the light spreading over the brow of the meditative monk and the gleam of light hitting the curls of his hair—for $234 (currently US$168.30/EUR142.63/GBP130.12 at the time of posting this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing what I see as a small masterpiece of etching, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
