Alfred Louis Brunet-Debaines (1845–1939)
“The Burial of Wilkie” (aka “Funérailles
de Wilkie, d'après Turner” [Beraldi title]), 1874, after Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) published in London by Seeley & Co (aka L
& G Seeley) (fl.1839–early XXc) as illustration plate to “The Portfolio”
(1874) and (according to Henri Beraldi [1888]) printed by Goupil (fl.1827–1919).
Etching with drypoint on cream
laid paper.

Inscribed on plate within the
image borderline: (lower left) “A Brunet-Debaines”.

The Curator of the British
Museum advises that Turner’s painting translated into this etching “was pair to
'War, the Exile and the Rock Limpet' (Butlin & Joll 400)” and offers the
following description of this print:
“Burial of Wilkie at sea; a
ship at centre, with flames and smoke seen blowing to the left; in the far
distance at left and right, boats; after JMW Turner (Butlin & Joll 399);
illustration to 'The Portfolio' of 1874; state with engraver's name”

Condition: richly inked and
well-printed impression (near faultless) in near pristine condition with no
tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of handling.
I am selling this stunningly
beautiful etching showing a distant blaze of light on a steamship as Turner’s
friend, Sir David Wilkie, R.A., is given an evening sea burial off the coast of
Gibraltar in June 1841, for AU$224 (currently US$166.34/EUR137.23/GBP124.71 at
the time of this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to
anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by
some countries.
