Marcus Gheeraerts I (aka Marc Garrard;

published in Bruges by Pieter de Clerck (fl.1567) as an illustration to page 140 in Eduwaert de Dene's (1555–1639) edition of Aesop's Fables, "De Warachtighe Fabulen der Dieren"
(The Truthful Fables of the Animals) (1567) with letterpress text verso.
The Curator of the British Museum offers the following
information regarding later editions of Gheeraerts illustrations for Aesop's Fables:
“The second edition counts 107 plates without a date.
A third edition of 122 plates was published by Christoffel Plantijn in 1579
titled ‘Mythologia ethica’. The fourth edition was published by de Vries in
Amsterdam in 1617 as an illustration to Vondel's ‘Vorstelijke varande dieren’.

Etching on fine laid paper trimmed with a narrow
margin around the image borderline, backed on a
support sheet.
Size: (sheet trimmed unevenly) 9.8 x 11.6 cm; (outer
image borderline) 9.5 x 11.5 cm.

this print:
“'The horse and the rat'; a hunter on a horse aims his

Condition: a superb early impression, trimmed close to
the image borderline and laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium
quality washi paper. There is a hole below the front leg of the
horse, otherwise, the sheet is in a good condition for its considerable age with no significant stains
or foxing.
I am selling this very beautiful etching executed by
an early pioneer of etching at a time when book-illustrations were primarily
woodcuts or engravings, for AU$329 (currently US$244.34/EUR201.48/GBP181.83 at
the time of this listing)
