Peter Halm (1854–1923)
“Donor Portrait: Joost Vijdt”, c1900, after a detail from the left panel of Jan and Hubert van Eyck’s “Ghent Altarpiece” (when folded closed), 1432, in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium.
Note that
Peter Halm executed another etching after Jan van Eyck, “Portrait of a Man
Holding a Ring”, that was published in “Die Graphischen Künste” in 1914 (see https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1920-0712-79).
Etching and engraving with pale plate tone on cream wove
paper with a line of printed descriptive text below the platemark.
Size: (sheet) 33 x 23.8 cm; (plate) 26.7 x 17.9 cm.
Lettered below the platemark: “STIFTERBILD AUS DEM GENTER
ALTAR. RADIERUNG VON PETER HALM”.
Condition: a well-printed impression in near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains, foxing or
signs of handling.
Note that this exquistiely fine etching is not in the
collection of the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the
Rijksmuseum or any of the other major museums that I have searched.
I am selling this masterwork of etching (with engraving) that translates into line each
lump and bump on the elderly donor featured in Van Eyck’s Ghent altarpiece—note in
particular how skilful the artist has been in portraying the slightly saggy
flesh on the donor’s hands—for the total cost of AU$246 (currently US$191.16/EUR156.31/GBP140.98
at the time of this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling
to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed
by some countries.
If you are interested in purchasing this sensitively executed translation of a small detail of Van Eyck’s painting—note, for instance, how the artist has connoted the soft texture of the patron’s fur-edged coat by leaving surface ink on the plate to lend the suggestion of richness to the engraved lines rendering the fur—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
