John Crome (1768–1821)

At Scoutton (now known as Scoulton), c1812, from the series, “Norfolk Picturesque Scenery, Consisting of Thirty-One Etchings”, published by Mrs Crome in an edition of 60 impressions in 1834 (of which this impression is a part). The plate was later reworked and inscribed with the title, “At Scoutton”, for the Freeman and J. B. Crome Edition, published in "Etchings of Views in Norfolk by the Late John Crome" in 1838.

Note that this print was originally the lower landscape composition in a composite plate of three scenes. Mrs Crome had the composite plate cut into three pieces for her rare 1834 edition. As a consequence of the larger plate having been cut, Mrs Crome’s edition shows a cut upper edge to the platemark whereas the pre-publication impressions lack an upper platemark edge.

Etching on chine collé (China) on wove paper with wide margins.

Condition: a near faultless, richly inked and well-printed impression with generous margins. The sheet is in an almost pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, losses, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of handling.

Note that this is the second copy of this print that I have listed. The earlier print has been sold.

I am selling this remarkable etching created with a sketch-like looseness of drawing suggestive of a plein-air (on the spot) study, for AU$391 in total (currently US$304.12/EUR251.84/GBP218.35 at the time of this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
