Xavier de Dananche’s etching, “Wooded stream with seated figure in moonlight”, c1867

Xavier de Dananche (1828–1894)

“Wooded stream with seated figure in moonlight” (descriptive title only), c1867, proof before lettering, most likely published by Alfred Cadart and Jules Luquet (fl.1863–1867) or Cadart and Léandre Luce (fl.1867–1870/1) for the Société des Aquafortistes and printed by Auguste Delâtre (1822–1907)—based on the artist’s usual practice and his membership with the Société des Aquafortistes.

Etching and aquatint on wove paper with wide margins before lettering.

Size: (sheet) 25 x 31.2 cm; (plate) 14.5 x 21.2 cm.

Condition: a richly inked impression with generous margins in excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, losses, abrasions, significant stains or signs of handling.

Note that this proof-state impression does not have an inscribed title, publication details or the artist’s name.

I am selling this darkly luminous and poetically beautiful etching executed in the spirit of the Barbizon School by a pupil of the legendary Corot for AU$217 in total (currently US$167.80/EUR138.55/GBP121.67 at the time of this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this amazing etching showing the faintest glimmer of light in a landscape—a subject that must have been both an adventurous choice and one that reflected the late 19th century fascination with the effects of light—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
