Anthonie Waterloo (aka Anthoni Waterloo; Antoni Waterlo) (1609–1690)

“Landscape with Venus and Adonis” (TIB title) (aka “Vénus et Adonis”), c1650 (1630–1663 [Rijksmuseum dates]), plate 5 from the series, “Six Upright Landscapes with Scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses,” published in Paris by Pierre François Basan (1723–1797).

Etching on laid paper trimmed with a thread margin around the image borderline, backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 29.3 x 24.4 cm; (image borderline) 29.2 x 24.3 cm.

Inscribed on the plate at upper-left corner: "5/ A.W. in et f.”

State iv (of iv) with “Cross-hatching added across a worn spot at the rear of the man’s left thigh” (Morse [1992], p. 160).

The British Museum offers the following description of this print:

“Plate 5: Venus and Adonis; Venus seated next to Adonis, who holds a spear at right, two dogs resting next to them, a third on a leash held by Cupid at centre, at left trees lining the course of a small stream; … from a series of six plates” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_Sheepshanks-1744).

(Transl.) “Adonis sits on a small hill in a rolling, wooded landscape. He embraces Venus, who leans against him. A dog is depicted in front and behind him. There is a quiver on the ground. Condition: a well-printed impression trimmed close to the image borderline and laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. Beyond closed tears (mainly on the top and right sides), the sheet is in good condition for its considerable age with no significant stains or foxing.
