“Rue Galande à Paris”, 1881, plate three from the series of sixteen etchings, “Vues de Paris”, a remarque (scratch) proof before formal lettering with publication details and the addition of “two women conversing in the middle of the street” in the foreground (see BM inv. no. 1882,0211.192) for publication and printing in 1881 by L Eudes (fl.1876–1888) as illustration to page 234 in “L’Art”, vol. XXIV.

Etching on cream wove paper with small margins, remarque studies below the image borderline and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 42 x 27.2 cm; (soft platemark) 40.2? x 24.5 cm; (image borderline) 35.8 x 2.8 cm.

Trial proof, lifetime impression, with two remarques before lettering and changes to the composition

The British Museum offers the following description of this print with its later addition of “two women conversing in the middle of the street” in the foreground:

“Rue Galande in Paris: a street with tall buildings on either side, including a café on the left; in the foreground a man walking alongside a horse-drawn cart, two women conversing in the middle of the street, a man about to cross the street, and a dog sitting in front of a hotel” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1882-0211-192).

Condition: a richly inked impression with small margins laid onto a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. The sheet is in an excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, losses, stains or foxing.
