Eugène Delacroix (aka Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix) (1798–1863)
“Sheet of Nine Antique Coins” (aka “Feuille de
neuf médailles antiques” [Sheet with nine antique medals]), 1825, printed by Victor
Jacques Bertauts (fl.1830s–1880) and published on 1st March 1866 in the
journal, “L’Artiste” in Paris.
Lithograph printed in sanguine coloured ink on
wove paper.
Size: (sheet) 28.9 x 39.8 cm.
Inscribed in the stone: (lower centre) “E.
Delacroix”; (lower right) “IMP. BERTAUTS, PARIS”.
Early state (iii? of v) before the published
state (iv) with the addition of the date, “1825”, below Delacroix’s signature
and before lettering with publication details for “L’Artiste”.

description of this print:
“Nine medals, represented sketchily, with from
top left to right: a sphinx, a head in profile to left, a nude male riding a
horse, a head wearing band facing front; from centre left to right: a head in
profile to right, a whole-length seated male nude figure, a bull with a man's
face and a figure floating above; from bottom left to right: a whole-length
helmeted man in drapery carrying weapons, an unidentified subject. 1825”

Condition: a strong impression in an excellent condition
with no tears, holes, abrasions, folds, significant stains or signs of handling.
