Emil Ganso’s wood-engraving, “Bathers”, 1933

Emil Ganso (1895-1941)

“Bathers” (aka “Three Bathers [No. 1]”), 1933, published in New York in the “The Colophon”, pt. 13, 1933, (n.p.).

Wood-engraving printed in black ink on tissue thin mulberry paper, signed in the plate, with full margins as published.

Size: (sheet) 26.8 x 21.4 cm; (image borderline) 22.6 x 17.5 cm.

Signed in the plate at lower centre: “GANSO”.

R–9B (Donald E Smith, 1997, “The Prints of Emil Ganso”, Canbury, Associated University Presses, p. 134).

The Art of the Print offers an excellent and detailed account of this print and others by Ganso: http://www.artoftheprint.com/artistpages/ganso_emil_bathers.htm.

See other prints by Ganso showcased by the National Gallery of Art (including the “The Bathers”, 1932, which is interesting to compare with this print): https://www.nga.gov/collection/artist-info.2517.html.

The Harvard Art Museums holds an earlier state of this print. I suspect that the museum’s impression may be a counterproof (but this information is not given in the description) as the image is printed in reverse: https://hvrd.art/o/255417.

Condition: a richly inked and near faultless impression in near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of handling.

I am selling this marvellous wood-engraving—viz. a woodcut in the white line manner—that is a superb example of the artist’s sensitive use of the lining tool (aka the multi-line engraving tool [https://www.lawrence.co.uk/multiple-line-engraving-tool.html], for AU$231 in total (currently US$169.45/EUR144.60/GBP122.59 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).

If you are interested in acquiring this beautifully executed masterwork of wood-engraving, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
