Frédéric Jacque’s etching, “La Ferme de Barbizon (La Nuit)”

Frédéric Jacque (1859–1931)

“La Ferme de Barbizon (La Nuit)” (Barbizon Farmhouse [Night), 1880, printed by G Malthe (fl.1850–1900) and published in 1891in an edition of 550 impressions by A Ferroud and Benezit-Constant in Paris, and Harry C Dickens in London as an inserted original etching between pages 88 and 89 in “Le livre D’Or de J.-F. Millet par un Ancien Ami” (see https://archive.org/details/gri_33125008236248/page/n105/mode/2up).

Etching with dot roulette, aquatint(?) and plate tone printed in Umber ink on buff-coloured laid paper (watermark featuring the Strasburg lily) with wide margins.

Size: (sheet) 27.7 x 34.9 cm; (plate) 16.6 x 23.2 cm; (image borderline) 13.7 x 21.1 cm.

Lettered on plate below the image borderline: (left) “F. Jacque, inv. & sc.”; (centre) “LA FERME DE BARBIZON/ (La Nuit.)”; (right) “G. Malthe, imp.”

Condition: a strong and well-printed impression with generously wide margins. There is slight mottling—I am uncertain if this is an intrinsic quality of the paper or simply age-toning—otherwise the sheet is in excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains or signs of handling.

I am selling this very poetic etching showing an evening view of the house in the village of Barbizon belonging to Charles Jacque—one of the luminaries of the Barbizon School—and his son who made this etching (see https://www.loc.gov/item/2016796494/), for the total cost of AU$220 (currently US$157.02/EUR134.14/GBP115.31 at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).
