Jonas Umbach (1624–93)
“The Drunken Silenus Led by Satyrs”, c1670
(BM 1645–1700).
Etching on fine
laid paper with a small margin around the platemark, backed with a support
sheet.
Size: (sheet) 9 x 12.4
cm; (plate) 8 x 11.9 cm; (image borderline) 7.7 x 11.5 cm
Inscribed in plate
within the image borderline: (lower left corner) “JonaS Vmbach f.”
Regarding Georg
Kaspar Nagler’s catalogue, “Neues allgemeines Künstler-Lexicon
…” (1849) for this print, I have difficulty determining the catalogue number;
see pp. 237–38 (https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_acQ-AAAAcAAJ/page/n244/mode/2up).
This etching is likely to be from the series, “Historische und mythologische
Darstellungen” (Historical and mythological representations) (Nagler 117–136),
but Nagler’s titles are too imprecise for me to propose the number (beyond
clarifying that it is not “128” as this etching is documented as being a
different scene).
The British Museum
offers the following description of this print:
“The drunken
Silenus led by satyrs to right; at left two putti following with a goat” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1854-1020-1260).
Condition: a richly
inked and strong impression with small margins laid onto a sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi
paper. Beyond a chip to the margin at the upper right corner, the sheet is in a
near pristine condition with no holes, folds, abrasions, stains or foxing.
I am selling this
rare original etching by Jonas Umbach—note that this print is not in the online
collection of the Rijksmuseum or The MET—for AU$342 (currently US$253.76/EUR213.75/GBP183.47
at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the
world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).
