“Flagellation of Christ” (aka “Geseling van Christus”),
c1598, plate 41 from the series of fifty numbered plates, “Vita, Passio, et
Resurrectio Iesu Christi” (The Life, Passion and Resurrection of Christ), after
the design by Maarten de Vos (aka Marten de Vos; Maarten
de Vos) (1532–1603), published by Adriaen Collaert in Antwerp with a line of
Latin biblical text (Isaiah 53: 5) below the image borderline.
Engraving on fine laid paper, timmed with
small margins (a thread margin on lower side) with a brown ink notation (“38”)
by and old hand on the lower right corner.
Size: (sheet) 18.2 x 22.8 cm; (plate) 18 x
21.6 cm; (image borderline) 16.2 x 21.4 cm.
Numbered and lettered in Latin in plate below
the image borderline: (left) “41.”; (centre) “Vulneratus est propter iniquitates
nostras, attritus est propter Scelera nostra: Disciplina pacis nostræ Super

Condition: a strong, lifetime impression with
small margins around the platemark. Beyond minor pale stains (visible verso)
and surface marks in the text field, the sheet is in an excellent condition for
its considerable age.
I am selling this superb impression of a rare
engraving exemplifying the period style of Mannerism for AU$312 (currently US$226.58/EUR195.60/GBP166.52
at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the
world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
