“Portrait of Robert Diez”, 1896, lithograph of the German sculptor, Robert Diez (1844–1922), published in Berlin by Genossenschaft Pan (1895–1900) in “Pan”, Volume 1, Issue number 2, September/October 1896, page 75—one of the most famous of the German art periodicals during the Art Nouveau period. The Blue Mountain Project (Princeton University Library) offers an online view of this print in its context: https://bluemountain.princeton.edu/bluemtn/?a=d&d=bmtnabe189610-01.2.24&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN------- ).

Lithograph on cream wove paper with full margins as published.

Insribed in plate within the image borderline with the artist’s monogram: (upper right corner) “KM”.

Printed along the lower edge of the sheet: (left) “KARL MEDIZ, ROBERT DIEZ ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHIE PAN II 2.”

Söhn 52702-6

The Rijksmuseum offers a description of this print: http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.211921.

Condition: a strong impression with full margins. Beyond two dots near the Diez’s chin, the sheet is in a near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains, foxing or signs of handling.

I am selling this technical superb and psychologically penetrating portrait of the German sculptor, Rober Diez—note how Diez’s gaze is “interrupted”, or distanced, by the edge of his spectacle frame and how the tiny glint of reflected light in his right eye projects a shrew and enquiring mind (at least to my eyes!)—for the total cost of AU$236 (currently US$172.26/EUR149.10/GBP126.62 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
