Katsushika Hokusai’s woodblock, “Steam Vents”, c1820

Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎) (1760–1849)

“Steam Vents” (descriptive title only), c1820, woodcut from volume 9 (of 15 volumes) of "Hokusai's Sketches" (北斎漫画) (aka “Hokusai Manga”; “Ten Thousand Sketches by Hokusai: Ehon”), pages 12 and 13, published in Nagoyaby by Eirakuya Tōshirō 永楽屋東四郎 (fl.1813–1842).

Pulverer offers an online view of this print in its context: http://pulverer.si.edu/node/663/title/9/7.

Two woodblock printed pages joined together to form a single whole image printed in black, grey and a pale orange-pink ink on fine washi paper laid upon a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 20.2 x 26 cm; (image borderline) 17.5 x 24.3 cm.

Condition: the original diptych of two separate sheets has been glued together by a past collector to create a single whole image. The sheet has old restorations along with minor staining and has been laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper.

I am selling this curiously wonderful original Hokusai woodblock print showing the master’s close study of steam escaping from volcanic vents, for the total cost of AU$266 (currently US$194.06/EUR169.51/GBP145.16 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this visually engaging woodblock print by the almost legendary Hokusai, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
