Aegidius Sadeler II’s engraving, “Martia Fulvia, Wife of Titus”, 1586–1629

Aegidius Sadeler II (aka Ægedius Sadeler; Egidius Sadeler; Gillis Sadeler; Gillis Sadler) (c1570–1629)

Martia Fulvia, Wife of Titus” (TIB title) (aka “Portrait of Marcia Furnilla, Wife of Titus”; “Martia Fvlvia Titi Vespesian. Vxor” [title as inscribed]), 1586–1629, plate 11 (XI) from a series of twelve plates portraying the wives of the twelve Caesars, “Famous Roman Women” (aka “Beroemde Romeinse Vrouwen”) (see the description of this series offered by the Curator of the British Museum and the first plate: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1878-0713-2656), initially published by Marco Sadeler (aka Marcus Christoph Sadeler; Marc Sadeler) (1614–c1660s).

Engraving on laid paper with small margins.

Size: (sheet) 37.4 x 26.1 cm; (plate) 35.6 x 24 cm; (image borderline) 30.1 x 23.5 cm.

Lettered in plate äbove the image borderline: (centre) “MARTIA FVLVIA TITI VESPESIAN. [sic] VXOR”.

Numbered and lettered in plate below the image borderline: (centre) “XI./ [four verses in eight lines in two columns] Tam bone … Tito.”; (left) “Ægedius Sadeler S. C. M. Sculp.”       

State iii (of iii) with Marco Sadeler’s publication details erased.

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “Plate 11: Marcia Furnilla, half-length, looking to the right, her right arm resting on a base, wearing a mantle embroidered with acanthus scrolls and fastened with a brooch Etching and engraving” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1878-0713-2666).

Condition: a well-printed but slightly silvery impression showing minor wear to the lettered text. The sheet is in an excellent condition for its considerable age with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains, foxing or signs of handling and there is a small margin of approximately 1 cm around the platemark.

I am selling masterwork of engraving by one of the major Flemish old master printmakers—note the amazing control exhibited in the artist’s use parallel lines of varying thickness and curvature to render the Empress’ mantle and tunic—for AU$304 in total (currently US$219.49/EUR192.78/GBP160.99 at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
