Anton
Woensam (aka Anton
Woensam of Worms; Anton von Woensam; Anton von Worms) (c1493/96–c1541)
“The Beheading
of St John the Baptist”, 1529, woodcut on laid paper with the artist’s monogram
and date at lower left, trimmed around the image borderline and backed with a
support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 13
x 8.4 cm.
This is a print
of the utmost rarity. It is not held in any of the major museum
repositories nor is it documented in the catalogue of Woensam’s prints in TIB (Walter L Strauss [ed.] 1981, “The Illustrated
Bartsch: Sixteenth Century Artists”, vol. 13, New York, Abaris Books, pp. 189–296).
Strauss (1981), however, does advise with regard to this artist’s series, “The
Passion of Christ”, that “Bartsch lists sixteen prints in this series, of which
he knew only seven. We have found two others, but could not locate the last seven,
if they do exist” (page 195).
Condition: an
early well-printed and strong impression showing no sign of wear to the
printing plate, trimmed along the image borderline and laid onto a sheet of
archival (millennium quality) washi paper. The sheet has an appropriate age
toning and is in an excellent (museum quality) condition with no significant
stains or foxing.
I am selling
this very rare woodcut for AU$467 in total (currently US$216.59/EUR291.12/GBP245.41
at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere
