William Baillie’s etching, “Ein Bauer”, c1780, after Van Ostade

William Baillie (aka Captain William Baillie) (1723–1810)

“Ein Bauer” (Meyer’s title) (A Farmer), c1780 ([BM attrib.] 1750–1810), unlettered proof after Adriaen van Ostade (1610–1685) possibly published in 1792 in John Boydell’s (1719-1804) edition of Baillie’s prints.

Etching and drypoint with small margins around the platemark, backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 18.5 x 15 cm; (plate) 15.3 x 11.6 cm; (image borderline) 13 x 11 cm.

Meyer 66 (Julius Meyer 1878, “Allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon” [2nd revised edition of Nagler's Artist Lexicon], Leipzig, Wilhelm Engelmann, p. 554, cat. no. 66 [see https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_0TMDAAAAQAAJ/page/554/mode/2up}).

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “Bust of a peasant, laughing and looking down to right, wearing a dark cloak and soft cap, in a rectangular frame, positioned in the lower right corner; after Ostade; unlettered proof. Etching with drypoint” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1870-0813-644).

Condition: a strong and well-printed (near faultless) impression laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. The sheet is in a near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of handling.

I am selling this small and curiously wonderful etching of a peasant framed in a window, for AU$254 in total (currently US$180.85/EUR159.62/GBP133.55 at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
