Ferdinand Kobell (1740–1799)

“The Sleeping Traveller”, c1780s, from a pair of etchings, “Deux Estampes au Lavis” (Two Prints with Wash) (Stengel 90–91) .

Etching with aquatint on laid paper trimmed with a small margin around the platemark and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 4.2 x 8.8 cm; (plate) 3.3 x 7.4 cm.

Inscribed in plate with the artist’s initials: (lower left) “f K”.

Stengel 91 (Stephan Christian von Baron Stengel 1822, “Catalogue Raisonné des Estampes de F. Kobell”, Nuremberg, Riegel & Wiesner, p. 70, cat. no. 91).

Stengel (1822) offers the following description of this print: (transl.) “The Sleeping Traveller. A boy seen from behind is lying on the ground, his head resting on his crossed arms, and turned? towards the left. His package is in front of him lying near a bush, and behind him his hat, below which are the letters: f. K.” (p. 70).
