Heinrich Knoefler’s wood engraving, “A Hunter Meeting Saint Wolfgang”, 1866, after Ludwig Seitz

Heinrich Knoefler (1824–1886)

“A Hunter Meeting Saint Wolfgang”, 1866, wood engraving after the design by Ludwig Seitz (1844–1908) in the tradition of 16th century German woodcuts, possibly published in Alban Stolz’s (aka Alban Isidor Stolz) (1808–1883) “Legende oder der Christliche Sternenhimmel” (Legend or the Christian Starry Sky), published in Freiburg im Breisgau by Verlag Herder (fl.1801/10–) in the 4th or 5th edition (c1866).

Wood engraving on fine wove paper trimmed with a narrow margin around the image borderline with letterpress text verso, backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 16.1 x 10.8 cm: (image borderline) 15.1 x 10.2 cm.

Lettered in plate: (on tablet at lower right) “1866/ [ligature initials, "LS", monogram of Ludwig Seitz]”; (on side of tablet at lower right) “KNOEFLER S … [Sculpt?]”.

Condition: a strong and well-printed impression trimmed with a narrow margin and laid onto a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. There is minor age-toning and a few indistinct spots, otherwise this sheet is in a very good condition with no tears, holes, folds or abrasions.

I am selling this remarkably fine 19th century wood engraving executed in the graphic style of 16th century German woodcuts showing St Wolfgang of Regensburg as a hermit being visited by a woodsman holding a cocked and loaded crossbow accompanied by a big-eared hunting dog (a Beagle?), for the total cost of AU$207 (currently US$153.30/EUR141.76/GBP117.35 at the time of listing this print) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).

If you are interested in purchasing this very beautiful wood engraving dated in the plate, “1866”, and showing the names of the designer and engraver, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
