Paul Rajon (aka Paul Adolphe Rajon) (1843–1888)
“Ninette”, 1886, an impression before
lettering for publication in London by J S Virtue & Co (fl.1820s-1908; James
Sprent Virtue [1829–1892]) in “Art Journal”, 1886.
I understand that the title, “Ninette”, was a
reference to Jean Baptiste Greuze’s (1725–1805) painting of the same
title that was later translated into a lithograph in 1880 by Samuel Cousins
(1801–1887) (see https://www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/979788
and cat. no. 196 https://archive.org/details/cu31924030670719/page/n249/mode/2up).
Etching with dot roulette and pale plate tone
printed in sanguine ink on fine wove paper trimmed along/slightly within the platemark
with wide margins.
Size: (sheet) 40.2 x 28.8 cm; (image
borderline) 24.3 x 17.8 cm.
Condition: a richly inked (near faultless)
impression with generous margins around the image borderline and in a pristine
condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains, foxing or signs of
handling.

If you are interested in purchasing this
amazing portrait—note how the artist has “found” the form of the subject’s nose
with delicate strokes as if he were constructing a contour map—please contact

make the payment easy.
