Jost Amman’s woodcut, “The Creation”, c1571

Jost Amman (aka Jost Ammon) (1539–1591)

“The Creation”, c1571 (based on the date of the publisher’s preface [1571]), published in 1579 in Frankfurt am Main by Sigmund Feyerabend (aka Sigismund FeyrabendSigmund Feierabend) (1528–1590) in a series of 201 illustrations depicting Old and New Testament stories, with associated biblical verse in German, “Newe Biblische Figuren: Künstlich vnnd artig gerissen durch den sinn vnd kunstreichen auch weitberühm ten Joß Amman …” (see https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1863-0725-1326-1526). This print was also published in “Opera Josephi” (see TIB, vol. 20 [Part 2], p. 743).

Woodcut on fine laid paper with letterpress text verso, trimmed with a narrow margin around the image borderline and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 12.1 x 15.7 cm: (image borderline) 11.8 x 15.4 cm.

Condition: a well-printed, but slightly grey impression showing no sign of wear to the printing plate, trimmed around the image borderline and laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper providing larger margins. The sheet is in an excellent condition for its considerable age with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains or foxing.

I am selling this remarkable woodcut showing an amazing assortment of animals—note the rhinoceros at lower right based on Durer’s famous woodcut—for AU$268 (currently US$185.80/EUR182.49/GBP154.21 at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
