The British Museum offers the following
description of this print: “A dog lying asleep on a fur rug, with a plumed
helmet behind to left” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1878-0511-169).
Sadly, the dog, “Countess”, is not sleeping as
Landseer has portrayed her. Instead, Countess was dead at the time when Landseer
painted her. I understand that she fell to her death from the top of a high balustrade
and her body was taken to Landseer to see if she could be immortalised. Landseer
completed “Sleeping Bloodhound” four days later (see “The Portfolio”, 1875, p.
65).
Condition: a richly inked and well-printed
(near faultless) impression in near pristine condition with no tears, holes,
folds, abrasions, significant stains, foxing or signs of handling.
I am selling this superb etching after Edwin Landseer’s painting and possibly also after the
engraving of the same composition by Edwin’s eldest brother, Thomas Landseer, for

print) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of
