Circle of Virgil Solis (1514–1562)
Note that many elements in the design of this
print follow Virgil Solis’ “The Good Samaritan” (TIB 19.158 [316], vol. 19
[Part 1], p. 363) (see https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1561-samaritan-virgil-solis-woodcut-475321373).
“The Good Samaritan”, c1550–1562, woodcut
illustration to the Gospel of Luke
(10:25–37), with letterpress German text printed on a double-sided leaf
(pages 93/94) from Veit Dietrich’s (aka Vitus Theodorus; Vitus
Diterichus) (1506–1549) “Summaria
uber die gantze Bibla, das Alte und Newe Testament”, published in Frankfurt am
Main by Sigmund Feyerabend (aka Sigismund Feyrabend; Sigmund Feierabend)
(1528-1590) and printed by David Zöpfel (aka David Zephelius; David
Zephelium) (fl.c1555–1563) and Johann Rasch (aka Johann Raschen) (fl.1556–1562)
in 1562 (Sotheby Auctions show a copy of this publication: https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2021/antiquarian-books-and-manuscripts/dietrich-summaria-uber-die-gantze-biblia-frankfurt).
Woodcut with letterpress text (recto and
verso) on laid paper with full margins as published.
Size: (sheet) 32 x 19.5 cm; (image borderline)
7.5 x 11.7 cm.
Condition: a richly inked and evenly printed
early impression showing little or no sign of wear to the printing plate. There
are two repairs to support tears in the margin, otherwise the sheet is in
an excellent condition for its considerable age with no significant stains, holes
or abrasions.
I am selling this very strong impression of a 16th
century woodcut illustrating the parable of the Good Samaritan—a caring
adversary who assists an attacked traveller while those who should help (viz. a
Jewish priest and a Levite) pass by—for the total cost of AU$212 (currently US$142.27/EUR142.48/GBP123.66
at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the
world (but not, of course, any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).
If you are interested in purchasing this fascinating
woodcut set within the full page of published text (recto and verso), please
contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal
