Jacob Matham’s engraving, “Kitchen Scene with the Meal in Emmaus”, 1603, after Pieter Aertsen

Jacob Matham (1571–1631)

“Kitchen Scene with the Meal in Emmaus”, 1603, after Pieter Aertsen (aka Langepier) (1508–1575), from a series of five plates (Hollstein 319-323), “Kitchen and Market Scenes with Biblical Scenes”, published in Haarlem.

Engraving on fine laid paper, trimmed around the image borderline with loss of the lower text line.

Size: (sheet) 23.6 x 32.5 cm; (image borderline) 23.2 x 32 cm.

TIB 4 (3).165 (171) (Walter L Strauss [ed.] 1980, “The Illustrated Bartsch: Netherlandish Artists”, vol. 4, New York, Abaris Books, p. 150, cat. no. 165 [171]); New Holstein Dutch 161 (Léna Widerkehr [comp.] 2007–08, “The New Hollstein: Dutch and Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts 1450–1700: Jacob Matham”, Ouderkerk aan den Ijssel, Sound and Vision, p. 41, cat. no. 161).

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “A kitchen scene with a cook preparing fish and a lobster at a large table; a youth interrupts the cook at left and holds out a small fish; beyond, a maid tends a pot cooking over a fire and a man hangs a curtain through which is a small room with Christ at a table flanked by two disciples (the inn at Emmaus); after Aertsen” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1857-0613-524).

See also the description of this print offered by the Rijksmuseum: https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collection/RP-P-OB-27.174.

Condition: a strong, near faultless, lifetime impression (based on the quality of line showing no sign of wear to the printing plate), trimmed around the image borderline with loss of the line of text below. There are areas of thinness and a few minor abrasions, otherwise the sheet is in a remarkably good condition for its size and age with no tears, holes, folds, significant stains or foxing.

I am selling this rare masterwork of engraving for the total cost of AU$598 (currently US$378.09/EUR387.01/GBP334.64 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in this exceptionally fine engraving showing the somewhat odd mix of imagery involving a Dutch kitchen scene of fish and a lobster being prepared with a scene from the bible (Luke 24:28–32) wherein Christ reveals to two of his disciples that is has risen/resurrected from the dead, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
